Australias’ Barrier Reef

The Cairns marina is home to a fleet which consists of quite a few really incredible dive vessels. The newest member in the fleet is the Seastar, only just launched this past month.

This specific amazing cutting edge vessel is ninety feet long, and would make the trip out to Seastar’s scuba dive sites in under an hour or so. The charter boat is definitely fast as well as safe, with tons of shaded and air-conditioned cabin open area.

Seastar Cruises also has constantly prided themselves on providing an extremely exclusive and personal excursion, and they may be changing their procedures to be able to improve the small group experiences that they have generally supplied.

Most people really like the particular basic fact that their company owners restrict the actual numbers on board to exactly 40 persons, certainly under the actual capacity of the charter boat; which would mean that there can be plenty of breathing space on board. With a speedier boat they can certainly abandon a little less earlier, however , still be typically the first vessel to see Michaelmas Cay, so that snorkelers and birdwatchers have got it all to themselves. This journey is unquestionably the A-list cruise with regards to birdwatchers that really want to blend an awesome reef experience which includes an opportunity to view tropical seabird varieties.

A nice a lot faster cruise out also will mean additional time can easily possibly be spent at Michaelmas Cay not to mention Seastar’s different dive mooring inside Hastings Reef; customers can right now spend more than five hours out at the reef.

Most of the Great Barrier Reef is distinctive in several ways, and one can be that it is usually often the winter the place to find the only well-known white whale in existence.

The whale, a particular 20-year-old Humpback whale nicknamed “Migaloo”, which translates to white fellow in a regional aboriginal dialect, gets to spend his summers eating around Antarctica, then the majority of years migrates northward towards the winter calving and mating grounds on the north Great Barrier Reef.

Migaloo was only identified off of Port Douglas last weekend, the earliest sighting of this one-of-a-kind whale ever since his migration southward towards Antarctica last year.

Just simply the spotting of that one-of-a-kind whale is actually huge news around Cairns. The Cairns Guide, our regional paper, ran some sort of cover story on the particular sighting, which include either some sort of first page picture as well as an inside fold out poster.

This isn’t exactly the only region in which this unique whale has an impression, as witnessed by the following stories which also highlighted Migaloo these previous months:

In July Migaloo ended up being a poster guy associated with (blank) a collection of protests against an armed service coaching exercise near Shoalwater Bay, found in the central district of the Great Barrier Reef. These kinds of exercises were jointly conducted by the American and Aussie armed forces forces. Protesters were concerned that the high intensity sonar that might be now a characteristic of this kind of activities would harm whale populations, and this includes Migaloo. There does indeed seem to be decent evidence connecting sea mammal deaths by using this kind of sonar, and because of the debate it seems peculiar that the exercise movements could possibly be planned through an acknowledged whale migration course at a time while whales tend to be about.

Also this year, there was clearly a conflict when a nearby individual profitably trademarked the word “migaloo”. Although some media accounts represented the owner of the trademark like a man that wanted to use the trademark as a means of raising funds to conserve whales, some others felt that a business oriented invasion upon nature and aboriginal culture.

Miglaoo of course has made it onto You tube., which suggests he’s obtained superstar reputation that rivals Paris Hilton plus Lindsay Lohan. We have yet to take a look Facebook . com or MySpace regarding Migaloo’s profile, however it’s without doubt in the event that he’s got a webpage, he’s got a large number of friends!

Crossing the Jardine River on Cape York

Leaving normality behind at Cairns, we journeyed up the Peninsula Developmental Road. This further descended in to a rugged corrugated trail which wound along the route of the telegraph line, between giant termite mounds as well as across numerous rivers around the little Aboriginal community of Bamaga on Cape York. “The beginning of HELL — return if you can”, announced an amusing handwritten sign even as we headed off into the actual wilderness!

River crossings of most manner and form interupted each leg of our journey — with axle-deep dirt, decaying wooden bridges (the actual odd log missing in some places to add to the task), deep bull dust or fast flowing water to keep you entertained. It was a traditional four wheel drive journey. The ultimate challenge, however, was the crossing in the Jardine River.

Even in the dry season, the Jardine River, just 35 km south of Bamaga, was a wide, one metre deep, fast-flowing river. In 1983, the luxury of a small car ferry had just become accessible to carry the vehicles containing the less foolish across this famous barrier for your princely sum of $20. Many husband and wife battles then erupted by the banks of the Jardine since cautious wives and thrill-seeking husbands debated the relative merits from the challenging river crossing and also the tame punt ride. As newlyweds, we too had our own dispute here, but in our case it was the adventure-seeking wife which desired the river venture!

To drive across a river similar to this requires lots of preparation. A diesel motor like ours requires a lengthy air snorkel to lure air from well above any possible water level. Tyres must be deflated, waterproof covers packed throughout the engine and openings for example fuel tanks and doors should be thoroughly waterproofed. We watched with concern as other vehicles attempted the crossing — and lots of failed, becoming stuck mid-river with the crocodile infested waterss swirling throughout the driver’s feet and camping gear floating in the rear of the vehicle!

Finally the thrill-seeking spouse won out. A group of fellow Landcruiser travellers came to our help and gave us a snorkel and covers which fitted our own vehicle. So with our vehicle set up just like a Christmas feast, we drove down to the muddy waters of the Mighty Jardine.

Across the river we all drove, pushing a moderate bow-wave before us. Dave said it felt so excellent he wanted to turn around and keep driving up the river! Then through a heart-stopping very deep hole near the end and up the steep bank we went, conquerors of the Jardine. I bet they don’t have this much fun on the organised Cape York Tours.

Our wet vehicle on the positive side seemed little the worse because of its adventure. However, it cost us more to switch the gearbox oils that had become waterlogged as opposed to little punt ride might have cost. So sanity prevailed on our return journey a month later and the Landcruiser needed a sedate ride over the Jardine on the punt!

Well, I Recently Bought A Seakayak

Six years after being employed by a kayaking touring and sales company I’ve finally got around to aquiring myself one. I have spent the last few years learning the areas rivers in an older style whitewater kayak, but this just wasn’t suitable for the coast.
This was getting super frustrative as I live 100 metres from the waterfront at Holloways Beach, a seaside area inside the Great Barrier Reef .
I’d already explored the Mulgrave River numerous times, the Upper Barron River was getting a bit boring also, so I had to get into that ocean.
As Cairns is a smaller country center the buying of a seakayak and the assorted accessories is not the easiest task. You can either go with internet auction sites, wait for someone to sell it used or just work with what you can get in your area.
Thats what had to do. I made the most of what I could find, with the notion of then turning it into what I need. I found a reasonably affordable chinease made sea kayak brand new. Now I knew that the fittings would be inferior quality, I also knew it probably wouldn’t be totally watertight. Luckily I was pleasantly surprised.
The only things that will need replacing are the shock cord deck lines and shock cord rudder lines. I may substitute the inner rudder lines with stainless wire as soon as needed.
As for setting up the boat with safety equipment my list is as follows
* V Flag for attratring attention
* Emergency tool containing whistle, mini compass, match striker, signalling mirror and small watertight storage for matches.
* Distress flares
* surplus paddle (cut into 3 sections for storage)
* Another signalling mirror ( I don’t desire only having one of anything that sinks)
* 3 x 1.5 liter containers of water
* 6 snap flouro glow sticks
* compact 1st aid kit
* thermal blanket

I already own some nautical charts as I’m a sailer, but I figure I’ll just copy relevant sections and laminate the smaller sheets. I have a compass ready to be fitted.

The expeditions I have planned in the immediate future to test everything out are Green Island, Fitzroy Island for the Fitzroy Island New Years Eve Party, Low Isles Dunk Island and Snapper Island.

In the future I plan to do the Hinchinbrook channel and paddle all the way the island. This is all leading up to the big expedition of Great Barrier Reef. I can fit approximately 100 pounds of camping gear and supplies without becoming too unseaworthy, so this should get me where I want to go. And I can sometimes tow a trolling line to replace my regular freeze dried diet with some fresh fish. I’ll also be stopping and camping so the barramundi gear will get a good work out too.
